Question by Choose your nickname: Internet advertising?
I was wondering if it was known how much traffic a commercial website must have (per-day, per-month, etc) for companies to become interested in advertising on that website. For example, let’s say a small start-up company created and ran a website for its business, what would it take for advertisers to want to advertise on that website? Any help would be greatly appreciated

It’s not only the amount of traffic, but the demographics and how it matches the target.

yes of course the “reach” of the site is one of the key factors for advertisers to consider. There are 3rd party tools such as comScore and Neilson/Netratings that publish “reach” figures of all major sites and can be used to demondtrate value of the site to potential advertisers. The Big boys such as Yahoo, MSN and Google get hunderds of millions of unique visitors per month.
Of course besides absolute reach, advertisers also consider the “quality” of traffic coming to the site – does the site attract only a particular typer of users? Is it catering certain interest group or cosnumer segment? – these questions are also important as far as advertisers are concerned.
The content of the site also plays an important role – inspite of good reach and high traffic, some advertisers may not want to be associated with certain sites – adult sites would be a good example of this.

There are many affiliate programs out there that you can use to place ads on your site and make money and many do not set a minimum traffic requirement.

the more the better…there’s great equity in a website that has high traffic

Companies most likely will not come to you especially for an up and coming business that just recently created a website. Sites like these are a dime a dozen so you will have to have an active role in linking and networking your website with others. As for earning revenue from web advertising I recommend Google Adsense. Easy to use and gives you more money per click than the competition. With web advertising traffic is the key. That cannot be stressed enough. Your click through rate is going to be somewhere at or below 5%, so 5 out of 100 people will click on an ad. A single click on an ad can generate anwhere from 5 cents to $ 10 depending on category.
